Since its inception in 1873, Rajshahi College has contributed a lot to enrich the social and political history of Bangladesh along with accomplishing its main objective of providing qualitative education. The College was established by the then British Indian Government with a view to expanding higher education in the eastern part of the undivided Bengal in which the local Zamindars and other enlightened elites also contributed a lot. From the beginning of academic activities on April01, 1873, Rajshahi College has been providing qualitative education and has contributed greatly to various social, cultural and political movements in Bangladesh. The students of Rajshahi College played a glorious role in the struggle for ensuring the dignity of Bangla language in 1952 and also in the liberation war against the occupant Pakistani forces in 1971 for the freedom of Bangladesh under the leadership of the father of nation Bangabondhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Thus Rajshahi College bears a golden heritage which can be found in different documents and photographs. But as everything is subject to decay and destruction, it is natural that in course of time the documents, photographs other signs of the glorious past of the college may one day go beyond the reach of the students, researchers or the individuals interested to know Rajshahi College. From this realization Rajshahi College authority thought of establishing its e-archive 2020 with a view to digitally preserve and present the historical facts in public and consequently formed a committee to collect, edit and process information, documents, photographs, different objects etc. But the spread of the pandemic of Covid-19 created a great obstacle in the regular activities of the effort.
An e-archive is a dynamic store which is enriched regularly by the inclusion and correction of information and data etc. The committee formed to create the e-archive is still working and it will be developed continuously. I hope the e-archive will preserve and show the past of Rajshahi College and its contribution for the nation and also for Bangladesh. We are celebrating the birth centenary of the father of nation Bangabondhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman this year. We dedicate this e-archive in the glorious memory of the father of nation.
Finally I thank all concerned for their efforts in the establishment of the e-archive. We have to go far with this archive and thus it will also be a resource for the researchers and interested individuals of the days ahead. I believe this e-archive will one day become a store of information and historical facts. I wish the gradual and continuous enrichment of Rajshahi College e-archive.
Md. Habibur Rahman, Principal, Rajshahi College
The establishment of Rajshahi College e-archive is another glorious innovation of the dynamic Principal of the college Professor Md.Habibur Rahman. Since he held the office of the Principal of Rajshahi College, he has been working day and night with a view to increasing the glory of the College. His innovative ideas have brought the College the dignity of the best college in Bangladesh for consecutive four years in the ranking of the Ministry of Education and National University. During his being the Principal, the College has developed in its academic standard and infrastructural beauty. The e-archive is a mark of the honourable Principal’s innovative and creative attitude. I hope the archive will provide a unique gate way to know the tradition and success of Rajshahi College as a pioneer institute in Bangladesh. I believe that it will be a centre of interest for the students and the researchers of future and also for the interested individuals. I thank the honourable Principal and all concerned for their sincerity and integrity for the establishment of Rajshahi College e-archive. I wish the archive may become more and more resourceful in the days to come.
-- Professor Md Abdul Khaleque, Vice Principal
An e-archive is a digital record of the past and Rajshahi College has taken the effort to launching its own E-archive with a view to set up a bridge between the glorious past and the promising present of the college which is expected to meet up the needs of future generations who may one day feel an urge to know the history and glory of Rajshahi College since its beginning. The present Principal of Rajshahi College Professor Md.Habibur Rahman took the initiative to introduce this archive in 2020 and instantly formed a committee to take necessary steps to set up Rajshahi College E-archive but the growth of Covid-19 created a great barrier in collecting data and interviewing the eminent persons related with the glory of Rajshahi College. But since the honourable principal was determined to establish the e-archive, no barrier could sustain and by September of 2020, when the might of the virus seemed to have become weak, the committee also became active behind which the honourable principal Professor Md.Habibur Rahman’s inspiration and insistence played the most significant role. The e-archive committee with the help of a number of students collected a number of documents and papers which
contain the history of the establishment of Rajshahi College and the contributions the College offered since its beginning. The documents were processed for digital content to be presented in the archive. Though there was an official committee for setting up the e-archive, in reality the honourable principal himself led all initiatives of the committee. The e-archive committee offers the honourable principal its humble gratitude and thanks. Without his leadership this job would never become a reality. The committee offers thanks also the heads of all departments of Rajshahi College, the alumni, teachers of the past and present of the college, the students involved in document collection and the processing of documents, photographs, video files etc., the persons who were kind enough to give interview and others involved at different stages in the process of data collection and preservation. Of course an e-archive is an ever active store of different events. Rajshahi College e-archive is also an alike digital store which will be always developed with new information. Similarly all present information will be corrected or altered if they are ever found wrong. Such corrections and advices to make the e-archive rich and a true evidence of history will be always welcomed.
